Wal-Mart will reportedly be the second major retailer — after Best Buy — to offer the Apple iPhone.

Cleveland, Ohio (CaymanMama.com) — The popular Apple iPhone will now be even easier to purchase at a local retail giant. According to PC World, Wal-Mart will reportedly be the second major retailer — after Best Buy — to offer the phone.

In addition, the second version of the phone, the iPhone 3G, will go for $197 for the 8GB version, $2 cheaper than what consumers would pay at the AT&T and Apple stores. Good news for those looking to save a buck…or two.

Earlier reports about the new Wal-Mart iPhone 3G sales began as early as November. In more recent days, Bloomberg reported that Wal-Mart cell phone department employees at five California stores are being trained to sell the phone.

“Many were expecting a much cheaper, stripped-down 4GB version of the iPhone 3G, sold for $99 with a two year contract. However, the latest reports say that this seems unlikely. In contrast, Reuters is reporting that the $99 entry-level iPhone is still on track. It is not yet known when the iPhone 3G will come to Wal-Mart though, as various sources quote either December 15 or December 28.”

The handy gadget makes up some 30 percent of the American smartphone market and accounts for 17 percent globally, trailing only behind Nokia.
