Iraq far from being normal – 40 arrested on coup plotting charges

Baghdad: The farewell visit of the US President George W. Bush ended with a shoe on his face. Along with the humiliation of Mr. Bush Iraq which seems to have come out of Saddam era is far from being normal. The interior ministry stated that 40 people have been arrested for plotting a coup. The interior ministry official stated, “Thirty traffic policemen and seven police charged with security at the interior ministry have been detained for an attempted coup.” “They were linked to the Al-Awda (The Return), a clandestine group that was working to bring the Baath Party back into power,” he added.

China requested to resume military ties with Washington

Washington (Reuters): US hopes that China would resume military ties with the United States which has been disrupted due to the arms deal between US and Taiwan. US had agreed to sell 30 Apache helicopters and 330 patriot missiles to Taiwan. The arms deal was worth $6.5 billion.

Flight return due to heavy fog in Paris

London (AFP): Heavy fog at Charles De Gaulle airport forced the pilot to return without landing in Paris. The British announced twenty minutes before landing that he was not qualified to land the airplane in foggy condition and would return without landing in Paris.

Oil hits $36 a barrel

New York (Reuters): The oil prices dropped to $36 a barrel yesterday as the demand for crude slumped down. Opec, a day earlier had decided to cut down the oil production by 2.2 million barrels a day starting January. The oil prices have started to fall after reaching a peak of US$147 per barrel in July.

Gates makes preparation to close Guantanamo Bay prison

Washington (AFP): Robert Gates have asked his team to draw up proposal for the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison. He is making his plans to comply with the orders of the new US president if he wishes to take early action on his plan of shutting down the detention center immediately upon taking office.
