Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Monday that the government will slash the cap on take-offs and landings at the bustling New York airport from 75 to 71 per hour

Rochester, New York (CaymanMama.com) — In order to combat some of the worst flight delays of any airport in the nation, federal aviation authorities are decreasing the number of hourly flights at LaGuardia Airport.

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Monday that the government will slash the cap on take-offs and landings at the bustling New York airport from 75 to 71 per hour.

Presently, LaGuardia ranks last on the list among the 32 major American airports in on-time arrival performance. According to USA today, “the outgoing Bush administration had sought to auction off some flight slots at New York City airports as an experimental effort to reduce delays nationwide, but a judge halted the plan.”

Upon making the announcement about the hourly flight cap, Peters called LaGuardia’s delays “the worst of the worst.”

The new flight cap will be a voluntary effort with the airlines and iss a last-ditch attempt by the Bush administration to reverse the epidemic of national flight delays.

Federal authorities are focusing primarily on the three New York City-area airports since approximately two-thirds of flight delays across the U.S. are caused by backups at those Big Apple airports.

“Gridlock in D.C. should not result in gridlock over the skies of New York,” Transportation Department lawyer D.J. Gribbin said. “We can still take the first step toward restoring reliable air service to LaGuardia.”
