The Bush administration is taking extra precautions to ensure that a terrorist attack doesn’t diminish the beginning of Obama’s presidency
Greensboro, North Carolina (CaymanMama.com) — With the handoff of presidential power only 24 days away, the Bush administration is taking extra precautions to ensure that a terrorist attack doesn’t diminish the beginning of Obama’s presidency.
In fact, the current administration has plans in place to test the incoming government’s readiness for January in a series of tabletop exercises involving top Bush and Obama officials, according to USA Today.
Trepidatious about the first transition of presidential power since the Sept. 11 atacks, the White House is also putting together several briefing books and office manuals intended to speed-brief the incoming Obama administration.
“This is the first wartime transition in 40 years, and it’s probably the first transition in a couple of centuries in which our homeland itself has been under threat,” says White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten, who’s supervising the preparations. The objective is to “make sure that those who are coming in are as well prepared as they can be to deal with an actual threat here in this country.”
It is currently unclear as to the specific scenarios White House officials plan to have played out during next month’s exercises. One major concern since the World Trade Center attacks has been the possibility that the U.S. government comes under terrorist attack. In that case, it is crucial that arrangements be in place for the swift replacement of vital government officials.
“They would be smart to be thinking about these things,” says John Fortier, executive director of the Continuity of Government Commission, created by Congress in 2002 to help plan for terrorist attack aftermaths. “You face a lot of perverse scenarios.”
