Cincinnati, Ohio (CaymanMama.com) — Even though technology has advanced and the art of dishwashing has come a long way, many of the standard methods used today still cost people more time and money than they care to waste. In fact, most of us are expending way more money and energy into cleaning our dishes than is absolutely necessary. Read on to learn how to save time and money when using your dishwasher.

According to CBS News contributor Nancy Giles, pre-washing and re-washing are extra steps that waste more resources since dishwashers are made to do the dirty work (if loaded correctly).

The biggest surprise is that pre-rinsing is a step that can be skipped altogether. Make sure to put all food scraps into the garbage or disposal and place the dish in the dishwasher set to high heat. When Giles tested this theory on a casserole dish of dried-on macaroni and cheese and an oatmeal-crusted saucepan, the dishwasher was able to remove all caked-on food without a problem.

* Always face the soiled surface of a dish toward the inside of the machine and not facing toward the walls. The spray will be able to reach the soiled part of the dish easierSoiled surfaces should always face the interior of the machine, where the spray is most likely to reach them.

* Avoid setting glasses over the prongs, since it can impede water flow. Use the prongs to prop up the glasses and hold them in place.

* Never, ever, ever allow pans to partially overlap each other since food and residue are sure to build up. Place the entire cooking surface face-down on the rack.

* The edges of knives should point downward, forks should point upward, and spoons can face either up or down.
