Cayman Islands (CaymanMama.com) — The Cayman Islands have taken a leap forward by adapting the Freedom of Information legislation, thus becoming the first British overseas territory to enforce FOI while Bermuda , a country that started the race for FOI, still staggers with dealing with the lack of political will for adapting the same. While the acting premier Paula Cox maintains, “PATI legislation is consistently moving forward in the legislative process. The Bermuda Government’s commitment to and position on PATI is unchanged.”

Kurt Tibbetts, the current leader of the Caymans received heartiest congratulation from his personal friend and Bermuda’s ex-premier who had floated the idea of public access to information said that the he had floated the idea of FOI for Bermuda in 2003 but Cayman, by implementing the legislation has taken a big step forward. He said, “It’s my New Year’s wish and hope that Bermuda will follow shortly,” he told The Royal Gazette. “It seems as if Cayman has followed their initiation of the legislation and implemented it in a timely manner.”

He also stressed that if the legislation is taken up by Bermuda, it can still be the second British territory or one of the British territory to make progress in this direction.

While the Bermuda’s former opposition leaders state that Bermuda has lots of structures that Bermuda can adapt, he said, “We have a lot of models we can choose from. Clearly what we are lacking at this point is political will.”
