Austin, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Hewlett-Packard Co. announced late Thursday that it would discontinue a distributor from selling the company’s products in Iran.

HP said it was aware that sales were being made even through there are currently trade sanctions on Iran, but insisted it did nothing illegal and was stopping the distribution altogether “to go beyond the letter of the law.”

According to the Associated Press, “The Boston Globe reported last week that HP could be in violation of U.S. export laws because of an arrangement it had with Redington Gulf, a technology distributor in the Middle East, to sell HP printers in Iran.

HP said at the time and reiterated Thursday that it complies will all export laws. But in a short statement provided to The Associated Press, HP said it would clarify contracts with its distributors “to explicitly prohibit the sale of HP products in Iran.” HP said it would more closely monitor its distributors.”

After closely examining the situation, execs at HP felt it was imperative that they go beyond the letter of the law, they said in a statement to the press.

HP reiterated that it was never, in the past, shipped directly to Iran and does not employ an staff there.

Andrew DeSouza, a spokesman for the Treasury Department which administers the sanctions, would not indicate whether or not Department is looking into HP.
