Crisis counseling and suicide hotlines have reported a remarkable surge in calls from individuals feeling despair over their financial status

Indianapolis, Indiana (CaymanMama.com) — The state of the economy is taking its toll on virtually every American and as a result, crisis counseling and suicide hotlines have reported a remarkable surge in calls from individuals feeling despair over their financial status.

It’s unknown if the economic downspin will lead to more suicides, says Lanny Berman, executive director of the Washington-based American Association of Suicidology. “Maybe the fact that so many are calling is a positive sign. They’re seeking help.”

During the Great Depression, suicides spiked but did not increase in subsequent recessions, which lasted an average of 10 months, according to the suicidology group’s website. The current recession is 13 months long and still going strong.

Berman continued that the biggest and newest concern is the rising unemployment rate since unemployed have nearly four times the suicide rate of employed adults.

“Losing your job, losing your home — these are such major losses,” Berman says. Even though people have the ability to cope through the hard times, many deal with mental health problems or unsupportive relationships making the matter worse.

According to USA Today, “Calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline jumped 36% from 2007 to 2008, totaling 545,000 last year, says director John Draper. But callers were increasing before the economic collapse, and about half of the added calls in 2008 came from taking over a veterans’ suicide line, Draper says.”

Those facing imminent foreclosure should not despair. Call 888-995-HOPE for more information.
