Raleigh, North Carolina (CaymanMama.com) — Family and divorce law is a tender topic and matters such as divorce, child support and division of assets require a competent, focused and dedicated representation.
Stephanie Jenkins, a partner at the North Carolina family and divorce law firm of Gailor Wallis & Hunt, is an example of a attorney that possesses all of those qualities and more. As one of the most skilled domestic relations, family and divorce attorneys in North Carolina, Ms. Jenkins is committed to helping her clients through the ordeals that families encounter in divorce.
Recently interviewed in The Advocate, a publication by the North Carolina Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, Ms. Jenkins gave a bit of insight as to her experiences as an attorney and her inspiration behind her drive to help families and individuals who are facing hard times.
After receiving her undergraduate degree from Davidson College and her Juris Doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Law, Ms. Jenkins worked as an associate at a New Bern, North Carolina firm focusing on domestic law before transitioning to the District Attorney’s office in Craven County. Shortly thereafter, she got her first opportunity to work with Carole Gailor and remained there for two years. In 1996, Ms. Jenkins went back to being a district attorney and began with the Wake County District Attorney’s office in Criminal Domestic Violence Court.
“This was a very proud moment for me in my career because I helped start this type of court in Wake County,” Jenkins said. “It was the first of its kind in Raleigh and one of the first in North Carolina.”
After a few more years in the District Attorney’s Dangerous Offenders Task Force (called “the worst of the worst”), Ms. Jenkins returned to private practice at Gailor, Wallis & Hunt in 2002 and began practicing domestic law again. In 2008, she was made a partner. “The knowledge and confidence I gained from my courtroom experience has helped me tremendously in private practice,” she said.
Inspired by her grandmother to become the powerhouse attorney that she now is, Ms. Jenkins appreciated the encouragement and determination that was instilled in her.
“She only had a seventh grade education, and when I was growing up, she always told me I could do whatever I wanted to do if I put my mind to it,” Jenkins remembers. “She was an inspiration in my life, both then and now.”
With that in mind, Ms. Jenkins has had many memorable experiences in her tenure as a prosecutor, a criminal defense attorney, and a family law attorney. One of the moments that stands out the most was after her successful prosecution and conviction of a rapist charged with four different counts of rape on the same victim. After the verdict was handed down, she was approached by the victim and was told that she had saved the victim’s life.
“I realized the work I was doing was truly making a difference for someone who had been through such a traumatic experience.”
With an impressive combination of expertise and compassion, Ms. Jenkins has learned how to be a truly effective advocate for her clients, taking on an objective perspective striving to be a good example for the young attorneys in her firm. She attributes much of her success to the mentors in her life who took out the time to teach and guide her, and feels it is important to do the same for up and coming attorneys.
