The salmonella outbreak due to contaminated peanut butter and peanut products has struck a personal chord with President Obama, ordering a full review of FDA operations

Kansas City, Missouri (CaymanMama.com) –The salmonella outbreak due to contaminated peanut butter and peanut products has struck a personal chord with President Obama.

Referring to his 7-year-old daughter on NBC’s Today show Monday, he said, “That’s what Sasha eats for lunch probably three times a week. And you know, I don’t want to have to worry about whether she’s going to get sick as a consequence to having her lunch.”

Because of this reason, Obama has ordered a “complete review” of Food and Drug Administration operations saying, “I think that the FDA has not been able to catch some of these things as quickly as I expect them to.”

Congress seems to agree with the president. The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry will conduct a hearing Thursday on food-safety. The House Energy and Commerce Committee will also hold a hearing on the salmonella epidemic next week.

The outbreak affected over 550 people in 43 states and is said the be the cause of eight deaths.

The salmonella strand came from a single peanut processing plant in Blakely, Ga., owned by the Peanut Corp. of America in Lynchburg, Va. The Food and Drug Administration claimes the company shipped infected peanut products to over 2,100 customers nationwide.

To date, 806 products that may contain materials from the Georgia plant have been recalled, making it the largest recall on record.
