Louisville, Kentucky (CaymanMama.com) — Actress, activist and Kentucky native Ashley Judd is calling for an end to the mining practice known as mountaintop removal.
Judd gathered alongside some 500 people on the steps of the Kentucky state Capitol on Tuesday for a rally in support of legislation that would end the practice of blasting away majestic mountain peaks in order to unearth coal.
The 40-year-old actress said she visited a few of the removal sites last year and could not have been prepared for the destruction she witnessed. Judd described “barren moonscapes” and “nothingness” where Appalachian peaks once stood proudly in the horizon.
Kathy Stein, a Democratic state senator from Lexington, feels the same way as Judd and is sponsoring legislation that would ban coal companies from filling valleys with the soil and rock from the blasted mountaintops.
Judd is a two-time Golden Globe nominee whose screen credits include “De-Lovely” and “Kiss the Girls”.
