A new research study suggests that steaming might improve the overall health-improving capabilities of certain produce.

Little Rock, Arkansas (CaymanMama.com) –Most people are under the impression that a bowl full of raw veggies packs the most nutritional punch over steamed.

However, a new research study suggests that steaming might improve the overall health-improving capabilities of certain produce.

When researchers studied the digestive effects of both raw and steamed veggies including beets, okra, carrots, eggplant, green beans, asparagus, and cauliflower, they found interesting results.

Although it is unclear exactly why, the steamed veggies did a better job of binding to bile acids. This is a good thing. This means that more bile acids are excreted, which in turn makes the liver require more bad LDL cholesterol to make bile, making less LDL circulate in the body.

The goal every day is to have at least five servings of vegetables every day — raw or steamed. Here are some ways to ensure that every bite of vegetables is effective:

  • Find out which frozen veggies are more healthful than fresh — and vice versa.
  • Decide which is better for you - regular produce or organic produce
  • Take in more nutrients from salads and steamed veggies with the healthy fats from nuts and olive oil
  • Sprinkle on extra antioxidants with herbs and spices.
