The old adage that “you are what you eat” is especially true after you swallow down that last bit of greasy, junk food from the corner fast food drive-thru. It is also the brain’s biggest enemy. Here is why.
New Orleans, Louisiana (CaymanMama.com) –The old adage that “you are what you eat” is especially true after you swallow down that last bit of greasy, junk food from the corner fast food drive-thru.
Chances are, after that Big Mac and super-sized fries, you begin to feel sleepy, fall into a bad mood, your brain works slower and you may even feel hungry all over again. Add the guilt that comes over you as the realization sinks in that you are that horrible food and the meal seems like a waste.
Guess what? It is.
Keep in mind that if you experience a strange sensation on the roof of your mouth, you are really noticing a signal from your body that you are harming yourself. Pay close attention to those signals as they are clues your body is sending you, especially after you eat unhealthy food.
The more food you consume that is full of sugars, empty carbs and bad fats including trans fats, the more impaired the brain is. That means you are unable to notice the biochemical signals that tell the brain to stop eating and storing fat.
These signals are made from the hormones insulin and leptin. Their job in the body is to control metabolism. Insulin tells the vast majority of the body’s cells whether to burn or store fat and sugar, and whether to utilize that energy for maintenance, repair or reproduction. Leptin sends signals to the brain that reduce hunger, increase fat burning and reduce fat storage.
Bottom line, eating clean keeps the brain functioning properly, keeps your energy high and your blood flowing as it should. Eat pleanty of lean meats, fruits, vegetables, complex carbs and good fats such as nuts and olive oil.
