Math buffs and algebra teachers have a reason to be excited today — Tuesday marks Square Root Day

San Diego, California (CaymanMama.com) –Math buffs and algebra teachers had a reason to be excited– Tuesday marked Square Root Day.

The quasi-holiday, which occurs only nine times each century, falls on 3/3/09 — or otherwise calculated as three being the square root of nine.

“These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day — and poof — they’re gone,” said Ron Gordon, a Redwood City teacher who launched a contest surrounding the event.

The winner of the contest wins $339 for having the biggest Square Root Day event.

Celebrations for Square Root Day are as interesting as the participants themselves. Some people carved root vegetables into squares, others baked or cooked food in the shape of a square root symbol.

The last Square Root holiday was five years ago, Feb. 2, 2004, which also happened to fall on Groundhog Day. The next Square Root day isn’t for another seven years, on April 4, 2016.
