Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Summer is around the corner bringing a veritable cornucopia of seasonal fruits and vegetables, ready to pack a nutritious (and delicious) punch!
One of the best fruits of the season is the rich, red colored citrus fruit, the blood orange. Since the orange tree often simultaneously produces flowers, fruit, and foliage, these juicy citrus fruits have long been associated with fertility.
Although frequently grown in California, most blood oranges come from Mediterranean countries and are considered one of the finest dessert oranges in the world.
Blood oranges have a thin, rich red-orange skin, with flesh that runs the spectrum of color from pink to brilliant red to dark burgundy. They taste tart-sweet and slightly like a berry.
Blood oranges can be eaten fresh like a regular orange, or cut up and eaten in salads, salsas, or sweet marmalades.
According to Cooking Light Magazine, “Oranges are rich in antioxidants―vital for healthy cells―including vitamin C, which aids in healing, boosts your immune system, helps your body absorb iron, and even helps reduce the risk of cancer. This citrus fruit is also a good source of fiber, which helps lower cholesterol and, like vitamin C, reduce your cancer risk. (To maximize your fiber intake, be sure to eat some of the spongy white pith right under the skin.)”
One medium blood orange will provide the body with a mere 70 calories, 3 grams of fiber, 1 gram of protein, and no fat, sodium, or cholesterol.
