US new strategy on Afghanistan - Obama aims at engaging Taliban
Washington (Dawn.com): President Obama, in speech wherein he outline new US strategy on Afghanistan said that factions of reconcilable Taliban will be given different options to choose from but he said, ‘There is an uncompromising core of the Taliban. They must be met with force, and they must be defeated.’
President Obama’s speech was followed by the explanatory briefing by the Assistant Secretary of State, Richard Boucher, who explained that the reconciliation process will be led by the Afghanistan government and the US will play a supportive role.
Korean region in high tension with Japans warning to shoot down North Korean Missile
Tokyo (Dawn.com): The US, Japan and South Korea has asked North Korea to refrain from any provocative act of launching any satellite, yet the North Korea has shown indications that it is going ahead with its scheduled launch of satellite which is says is for peaceful purpose. Amid rising tension, Japan had put its forces on high alert order shoot down of any rocket or missile from North Korean side.
North has how ever warned that any such act would be considered as act of war. While other countries like US, South Korea are calling any such launch unacceptable.
Sri Lanka determined to chase Tamil Tigers away from their land
Colombo (Dawn.com): Despite International call for truce in fear of risking lives of many civilians, the Sri Lanka army seems to be determined to route out Tamil Tigers from their land. The security forces kept pushing in the last patch of land where the Tigers still have considerable hold and are also barring civilians from leaving the land using them as a shield.
The International community has asked the Sri Lanka government to soften its stand and have called for ceasefire peace in not in sight.
69 killed in Indonesia dam spill
Jakarta (AP): The Indonesia dam burst has caused death of 69 people. The torrential rains caused dam spill. The incident occurred midnight brought down houses, torn down trees and tossed cars. The water surge swept away people and ended up taking lives of 69 people and many are still missing.
Obama to announce stimulus package for auto makers on Monday
Washington (Reuters): The US auto giants General motors and Chrysler LLC are waiting for President Obama’s announcement about the steps to cut debt of the auto makers and their supplies and for cutting costs with the growing decrease in the automobile demand in the US. The task force, as per Reuters, has to meet today with finalize the repeated meeting it had with the managers of the auto industry and will be forwarding recommendations that the President will be announcing on the first day of the coming week.
