Brussels (Dawn.com): The NATO chief Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer while commenting on the new US strategy on Afghanistan said that ‘In my opinion, it is necessary to stay in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future.’ ‘I think the Obama plan is realistic about what can be achieved … That means we will not be able to change Afghanistan into Switzerland in a few years’ time,’
Navy comes to help of security forces - 26 Tamil Tigers killed
Colombo: The Sri Lanka Navy came to the rescue of the land security forces and attacked four boats carrying separatists after a 6 hours long sea battle with the fleeing rebels. The Navy witnessed a group of boats of LTTE and engaged them in the late night hours, The Navy spokes man said, ‘All four LTTE boats were destroyed killing 26 Sea Tigers including a leader on board. We lost one sailor due to gunshots and three others including an officer were injured.’
Former Russian commander shot dead in Dubai
Dubai: Former Russian army commander and arch enemy of the Chechen strongman leader was assassinated in the Dubai. The head of Dubai police department reported that “The murder of the Chechen seems to be an assassination because he was shot dead in the parking of the building where he was living.”
However the Russians were to be unsure that the man who was shot dead in Dubai was the the former Russian army commander.
Meeting with Iranian officials at Afghanistan conference possible
The Hague (CNN): “I believe that there will be an opening by this conference that will enable all the countries, including Iran, to come forward,” said the US secretary of State, Hillary Clinton but refrained from stating where a meeting between the US and the Iranian officials was in cite on the sidelines of the International conference on Afghanistan.
She added, “The fact that they accepted the invitation to come suggests that they believe there is a role for them to play, and we’re looking forward to hearing more about that.”
