Since watering is an essential part of gardening, why not preserve water wherever possible and save a little money in the process?

Orlando, Florida (CaymanMama.com) — With the colors and sunshine-filled days of spring already upon us, now is the time to begin the irrigation of your garden to prepare for new blooms.

Since watering is an essential part of gardening, why not preserve water wherever possible and save a little money in the process?

An easy way to drench your soil and keep your wallet full is to water your garden in the early morning. Why? Simply put, up to 30% of water used during midday watering will evaporate, while nighttime watering causes the soil to stay damp longer, sometimes leading to mold. Early morning watering helps the water to absorb into the soil during the afternoon hours.

An even bigger reason to preserve water is because nearly 50%-70% of the water a typical American household uses goes to the lawn and garden. An easy way to water in the morning is to set your sprinkler timer for early in the a.m.

Other tips to try:

  • Water a garden only when the ground is dry.
  • Make sure sprinklers are directed to water your garden - not the sidewalk.
  • Raise the level of your lawn mower to 2 or 3 inches. Higher grass holds moisture better since it shades the roots.
