20 percent of Americans now are of the opinion that the economy is improving.

Memphis, Tennessee (CaymanMama.com) –In the face of a recession, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll on Monday shows that Americans are growing increasingly optimistic about the state of the economy as well as the direction the country is headed since President Barack Obama took office in January.

Two-thirds of those polled said they approved of Obama’s overall performance as the nation’s new president. Only 31 percent said they had a positive opinion of the Republican Party, the lowest rate overall in the 25 years the question has been asked in the poll, The New York Times said.

According to Reuters, “The number of people who said they thought the United States was headed in the right direction jumped from 15 percent during the final days of Republican President George W. Bush’s administration in mid-January, before the inauguration, to 39 percent today, the newspaper said.”

The number of those surveyed who said America was headed in the wrong direction dipped to 53 percent from 79 percent.

Thirty-four percent said the economy, already starting to show signs of improvement, was worsening, a fall from 54 percent just before Obama took his oath of office. The poll also showed that 20 percent of Americans now are of the opinion that the economy is improving.

The national poll was conducted by phone and was taken of 998 adults between Wednesday and Sunday. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.
