South Carolina coastal wildfires blazed a scary trail toward Myrtle Beach, one of the busiest tourist areas in the state on Thursday

Houston, Texas (CaymanMama.com) –South Carolina coastal wildfires blazed a scary trail toward one of the busiest tourist areas in the state on Thursday, scorching dozens of residences and forcing hundreds to evacuate in the dark hours of night. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

Police hurriedly knocked on doors to stir residents from their sleep as strong winds pushed the blaze deeper into a four-mile-wide stretch of forests and scrub, headed toward the Barefoot Landing development, a sprawling complex of homes, condos and lush golf courses set apart from the main route through Myrtle Beach by the Intracoastal Waterway.

Officials hoped the Intracoastal Waterway would stand as a natural firebreak to preserve the more populated areas closer to the beach.

State officials said nearly 70 homes had been destroyed and county fire chief Garry Alderman described some residences as left with only “skeletal remains.”

“I’ve never seen anything this bad,” he said.

The governor of South Carolina declared a state of emergency for the county.

According to the Associated Press, “A cause of the fire, which started a day earlier in a wooded area west of the beach, had not been determined. The governor’s office said more than 15,000 acres, or about 23 square miles, had been scorched by early Thursday morning.”
