Government health officials are telling the public to avoid eating raw alfalfa sprouts, as they could be contaminated with a strain of salmonella

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (CaymanMama.com) — As if the widespread salmonella scare wasn’t bad enough before with the peanut butter scandals, now government health officials are telling the public to avoid eating raw alfalfa sprouts, as they could be contaminated with a strain of salmonella.

There have been 31 reported cases of salmonella infection associated with eating raw alfalfa sprouts in Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah and West Virginia. No deaths have been reported with the new salmonella scare in the sprouts.

According to the Associated Press, “The Food and Drug Administration reports that the contaminated sprouts were grown in multiple states, raising suspicion that the problem stems from the seeds for the plants.”

Reports first began trickling in during the middle of March and tests are still being conducted.

The FDA says the issue is most likely related to an outbreak of the same salmonella strain in early 2009 in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas and Minnesota.
