Pet owners beware: a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency has bad news and it could pose a threat to many more pets in the future
Hartford, Connecticut (CaymanMama.com) — Pet owners beware: a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency has bad news and it could pose a threat to many more pets in the future.
As per the EPA report, topical and on-spot flea and tick medications injured 44,000 pets in 2008. Scary, isn’t it?
The study conducted on a group of EPA-registered pet products, commonly found at drug stores or on supermarket shelves last year included sprays, collars, and shampoos – any topical or on-spot treatment for ticks and fleas .
Most of the incidents reported involved spot-on treatments, such as treatments disbursed in tubes or vials and used on a specific part of an animal’s body. Reported reactions varied from minor like rashes, all the way up the scale to seizures, and, in some cases, death.
The EPA has advised pet owners to avoid buying flea and tick products at the grocery store and stick with doctor-recommended products.. “Stick with a product you’re getting from a veterinarian,” advises Dr. Matthew Cooper.
The seven products on the report issued by the EPA, which pet owners can find on the product label, made up for nearly 80 percent of the reported incidents, the agency said.
The following are EPA approved safety tips to avoid injuring any pets in the future:
- Carefully read and follow the product label
- Use flea and tick control products only on the animal specified ─ for example, dog products for dogs only
- Only apply the amount indicated for the size of the animal being treated
- Pay attention to the age restrictions
- Monitor your pet for side effects
- If your pet has an adverse reaction call your vet immediately
