Pakistani student not found guilty of terrorist plot must be allowed to finish their studies in UK -Pakistan Foreign Office

London: Discussing the legalities and possibility of concluding an extradition treaty, Pakistan has up till now not given in to the UK demand of not prosecute the accused student upon arrival in Islamabad. Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pakistan Foreign Minister said after a meeting with his British counterpart, David Miliband, ‘We are open to consultations on the issue. We have said we are prepared to cooperate with the UK government on terror threats and provide all kinds of help to them to persecute those found guilty. But if they are found not guilty we are committed to do everything to help such Pakistanis, and we have requested the UK government to let these students complete their studies rather than deporting them,’

District governments in Balochistan abolished, replaced by Local Government Act

Quetta: The Balochistan provincial government, yesterday, pass a bill unanimously abolishing district governments and replacing them with the local governments rule. The new law will envisage setting up of local bodies under metropolitan corporation and municipal corporation committees. The statement issued in this regards stated ‘Under the new law, urban and rural areas would be differentiated and rural councils would also be set up. It was also decided to hold next local bodies elections on non-party basis under a new election authority. The new act would abolish the provincial local bodies’ commission and authorize the government to audit local government funds.’

US shifts focus to Saudi Arabia to help Pakistan in fight against Taliban

Riyadh: The US Defense Secretary Robert Gates on board to Saudi Arabia to request the Saudi government help Pakistan in its fight with Taliban. He stated, ‘The Saudis, in particular, have considerable influence in Pakistan. And so I think that whatever they can do to bring Pakistanis together in a broader sense to deal with the challenge to the government in Islamabad obviously would be welcome.’

46 security personnel abducted by Taliban in Mingora

Mingora: In violation of the Swat peace deal, the Taliban took control of Mingora and abducted 46 security personnel. The government official reported that militants attacked the government head quarters located at the circuit house and a police station.

Curfew has been imposed in Swat to avoid any untoward incident, yet clashes between the Taliban and security forces have been reported in Bahrain, Matta and Shamzai.

139.85 lost at Karachi Stock Exchange

Karachi: As tension prevails in Karachi and the law and order situation through out the country deters as well as the political uncertainty about the weak and fragile Zardari led government mount, the investors and traders at Karachi Stock Exchange became bullish. The Index lost 139.85 points yesterday bringing the KSE-100 index to 7,310.07 points level.
