US to support democracy in Pakistan - Richard Holbrooke

Washington (Dawn.com): “We will strongly oppose it, it will be terrible,’ replied Mr. Holbrooke answering a speculative question about possibility of a military coupe put forward by the House of Foreign Affairs Committee yesterday. He also asserted on other US commitment with Pakistan by saying, ‘Our goal must be unambiguously to support and help stabilize a democratic Pakistan headed by its elected president, Asif Ali Zardari.’

He clarified that the US aid to Pakistan is not linked with allowing access to Dr. A,Q,Khan but said that US might work alongside Pakistan to shut off broadcasting through Taliban FM radio station.

Pakistan wants peace with India, Zardari waiting for Indian elections to end

Washington (Dawn.com): During an Interview with CNN during his 3 days visit to the US, President Asif Ali Zardari said that Pakistan has always wanted peace with India and still wants to pave way for peace and harmony with its most important neighbor. He said, ‘Democracies have never gone to war,’ ‘We have always wanted peace. We still want peace with India.’ He added, ‘I’m waiting for the elections to be over so all this rhetoric is over and I can start a fresh dialogue with the Indian government.’

Kerry Lugar bill discussion contains accountability against massive aid package

Washington (Dawn.com): One eyes on the Kerry Lugar bill which is been discussed in the US Senate. The White house reiterated yesterday that Pakistan, this time, will not get any blank checks. The White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said, ‘The president has said on numerous occasions there shouldn’t be and there won’t be blank checks.’ The president supports the building in of accountability measures to ensure that we are making progress and if progress isn’t made then we’ll readjust our strategy.’

Swat resident move out of their homes fearing intense fighting between militants and security forces

Peshawar (Dawn.com): Over 50,000 people have already been displaced and more are forced to leave their homes as fighting between the Taliban and the security forces get intense. Late night TV news stated that Taliban has forcefully taken over the homes of people in Swat and have also captured the house of local government representative. The Taliban spokesman said that their actions are in response to the military action. He said that 90% of the valley is under their control.

Weak rally staged at Karachi Stock Exchange

Karachi (Dawn.com): The Karachi Stock Exchange registered a modest gain after a volatile session which involved small volume. The trading session ended with a small gain of 19.58 points that brought the KSE-100 index to 7,081.83 points.
