UK and Pakistan take steps to strengthen bilateral relationship
London (Dawn.com): UK and Pakistan agree to widen up there partnership to promote mutual prosperity and stability on the basis of four major principles which involves-cooperation in handling terrorism, helping to keep up the socio-economic development in Pakistan, maintaining a normal relations with India and minimizing Afghan related pressures on Pakistan.
During the meeting the Prime Minister Gordon Brown offered immediate assistance £12 million for internally displaced persons. In the meeting President Zardari reassured that Pakistan’s nuclear assets were safe and secure and he is also still working out for acquiring the drone technology on ownership basis.
Government of Pakistan on one weeks notice to reduce oil prices by Supreme Court of Pakistan
Islamabad (Dawn.com): The 3 member supreme court bench comprising of the Chief Justice of Pakistan Chaudhry Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed and Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed have given the Pakistani leadership a week to review the prices of petroleum and provide relief of up to 20% to the citizens of the country.
The Bench rules that, ‘Either the government should take some decision or the court will pass an appropriate order.’ The Chief Justice of Pakistan also maintained that, ‘Who else will give benefit to the people if not (their) democratically elected government.’
Rawalpindi police detained a colonel and a lawyer for spying
Islamabad (Dawn.com): The parliament was informed yesterday by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs that the Rawalpindi police has detained a serving colonel, Col. Shahid Bashir and his Lawyer friends Nadeem Shah on charges of spying.
The army officials are investigating the detained people and further details will be revealed to the parliament as and when the same are received.
Pakistani troops take more ground in Peochar valley
Islamabad (Dawn.com): According to the army, the security forces had set the foot on Peochar Valley and were targeting militants’ shelters over there. As per the ISPR reports 11 militants and four soldiers were killed and twelve others were injured during the Swat operation.
Local people said that the militants were freely roaming around the city and warning people to leave swat. They also said that the militants were killing the rivals and throwing their bodies around the city to terrorize people. The sources informed that there could be face to face battle if the security forces entered Mingora because militants were preparing for a final shutdown.
Karachi Stock fails to sustain high levels of 7,434.63 points
Karachi (Dawn.com) : On Wednesday, the Karachi share market opened on the positive note hitting the intra-day high of 7,434.63 points but it did not continue and closed at 7,242.60 points after touching the intra-day low of 7,211.78 pointed with a net loss of 54.30 points mainly because of foreign portfolio selling.
