Minnesota judge rules parents can’t refuse medical treatment for cancer-stricken son
2009-05-15 17:58:29 (GMT) (Caymanmama.com - News)Hartford, Connecticut (CaymanMama.com) –Ruling in favor of life over death, a Minnesota judge has ordered that a 13-year old boy with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a highly treatable form of cancer, must seek chemotherapy and other medical treatments despite his parent’s objections regarding religion.
Daniel’s family wants to treat his cancer with homeopathic medicine and asked the judge to allow Daniel to refuse chemotherapy for religious reasons.
Brown County District Judge John Rodenberg said Friday that Daniel Hauser of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota has been “medically neglected” and requires the help of child protection services.
Rodenberg said Daniel will remain in the custody of his parents, but Colleen and Anthony Hauser have a deadline of May 19 to complete an updated chest X-ray for Daniel and select an oncologist.
Daniel’s medical team has said his form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma has up to a 90 percent chance of total treatment through the use of chemotherapy and radiation. Without it, doctors said Daniel’s chances of survival are only 5 percent.
