Austin, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Delivering on his promise to act quickly on air pollution and auto emissions, President Barack Obama announced Tuesday an improved fuel and emission standard that he says will finally put the U.S. back on track for cleaner air and better fuel efficiency.

Accompanied by leaders of Congress and key members of the industry and auto workers union, Obama said: “The goal is to set one national standard.”

The plan the administration unveiled would have an objective of saving billions of barrels of oil, is spite of the fact that it also is projected to cost consumers an additional $1,300 per vehicle by 2016.

Obama agreed that “it costs money to build these vehicles.” But he also emphasized that “the cost of driving these vehicles will go down as drivers save money at the pump.”

Carol Browner, the White House energy and climate director, publicly praised the administration’s plan of action, calling it a “truly historic” occasion and saying harsher standards are “long overdue.”
