Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — A writer from North Texas has been given the top literary honor of becoming the Texas Poet Laureate of 2010. For this writer, however, the day she learned of that honor was also the first anniversary of her first treatment for breast cancer.
Denton, Texas writer, Karla Morton the two dates coinciding with each other seem to be a happy coincidence.
“I found out on the year to the date that my nightmare began with the cancer operation,” Morton said. “I was ecstatic. There almost aren’t words.”
Words are still free flowing for the passionate poet who says she continued to put pen to paper all the way through chemotherapy and radiation.
Even during harsh cancer treatments, Morton kept writing with a main goal: make good on her nomination to the Texas Commission on the Arts for the state’s top poetry honor.
“There is a large group of things you have to do. You have to submit a packet, and you really need to have [been published in] a certain number of publications to really qualify,” Morton said.
The official ceremony to honor Texas’ leading musician, poet and artists will be read Wednesday in Austin.
Morton’s work can be found in a number of literary journals: descant, Amarillo Bay, Concho River Review and Southwestern American Literature, and she has published pieces in the Texas Poetry Calendar and more.
Morton was nominated by The Texas Commission on the Arts as well as several names to be poet laureate. Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and the Legislature were the final say in the matter. Paul Ruffin, director of the creative writing program at Sam Houston State University, held the honor for 2009 Texas poet laureate.
That being said, Morton is the first woman in 15 years to win the honor.
“Paul Ruffin. He’s a wonderful poet. Really, I’m just thrilled to be in such wonderful company,” Morton said.
