Boston, Massachusetts (CaymanMama.com) — Federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor has been handpicked by President Barack Obama to become the next Supreme Court on Tuesday, according to officials.

If she fills the seat, Sotomayor will become the first Hispanic in history chosen to don the robes of a justice

If approved by the Senate, Sotomayor, 54, would take the place of retiring Justice David Souter. No formal announcement had been made yet, though one is expected on Tuesday.

Administration officials say the promising federal appeals judge will deliver increased judicial experience to the Supreme Court, more so than any justice confirmed in the past 70 years.

Obama stated he desired a justice who was a smooth mix of intellect and empathy with an ability to understand the troubles of everyday citizens.

If confirmed, Sotomayor would join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the second woman on the current court.

According to the Associated Press, “Sotomayor is a self-described “Newyorkrican” who grew up in a Bronx housing project after her parents moved to New York from Puerto Rico. She has dealt with diabetes since age 8 and lost her father at age 9, growing up under the care of her mother in humble surroundings. As a girl, inspired by the Perry Mason television show, she knew she wanted to be a judge.”

During her Senate confirmation hearing over ten years ago, Sotomayor said, “I don’t believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstance. It says what it says. We should do honor to it.”
