Jacksonville, Florida (CaymanMama.com) –Hong Kong health officials say they have identified trace amounts of cocaine in cans of Red Bull.
This news comes only days after Taiwanese authorities commandeered nearly 18,000 cases of the popular energy drink.
Officials at the Centre for Food Safety said a lab analysis identified trace amounts of cocaine in samples of “Red Bull Cola,” “Red Bull Sugar-free” and “Red Bull Energy Drink”, a spokesman said.
The energy drink has been pulled from supermarket shelves, the spokesman said in a statement issued Monday. He added that the amount of cocaine found in the cans posed minimal health dangers.
Red Bull quickly denied the claims and insisted the independent tests on the same batch of drinks had found nothing of the sort.
The Centre for Food Safety identified traces of cocaine between 0.1 and 0.3 micrograms per liter, the statement said.
Sally Wong, Hong Kong’s commissioner for narcotics, said said the government is listening to legal advice regarding any possible liability for importers and retailers.
“Cocaine is a dangerous drug… The possession and dealing in the drug is a criminal offence,” she said in the statement.
