Little Rock, Arkansas (CaymanMama.com) — President Barack Obama chose Republican congressman, New York Rep. John McHugh to hold the position of secretary of the Army Tuesday, bringing on board another member of the opposing party into his administration’s team.

Obama praised McHugh saying he is “committed to keeping America’s Army the best trained the best equipped, the best land force the world has ever seen.”

McHugh’s job will be to ensure that the nation’s military troops are fully equipped to take new kinds of combat in the 21st century, including non-conventional warfare, Obama said.

According to the Associated Press, “McHugh has represented upstate New York in Congress since 1993, and is the top Republican member of the House Armed Services Committee.”

“The Army’s always had a special place in my heart,” said McHugh.

He has also served as co-chair of the House of Representatives Army Caucus and also as a member of the Board of Visitors of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
