Charlotte, North Carolina (CaymanMama.com) –The FDA issued a stern warning to consumers against the use of skin products made by Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory Inc. of Roy, Utah, due to elevated levels of disease-causing bacteria found during a inspection recently.

In response, Clarcon issued a voluntary recall of a handful of skin sanitizers and skin protectants sold under several different brand names, the FDA said in a statement.

Consumers have been urged not to use any Clarcon products and should discard the products they do have from Clarcon, the FDA said.

According to the Associated Press, “Analyses of several samples of over-the-counter topical antimicrobial skin sanitizer and skin protectant products revealed high levels of various bacteria, including some associated with unsanitary conditions, according to the agency.”

Scientists found that in some cases, the bacteria found in the skin care products can cause skin infections as well as infection in the underlying tissues, and could result in medical or surgical attention up to and including permanent damage.

Some of the products recalled include Citrushield Lotion, Dermasentials DermaBarrier, Dermassentials by Clarcon, Antimicrobial Hand Sanitizer, Iron Fist Barrier Hand Treatment, Skin Shield Restaurant, Skin Shield Industrial, Skin Shield Beauty Salon Lotion, Total Skin Care Beauty and Total Skin Care Work.

The FDA said its findings were particularly concerning since the products under recall are marketed as antimicrobial agents which are geared toward treating open wounds and damaged skin, as well as for the protection against a variety of infectious skin diseases.

The inspection revealed serious errors from the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practice requirements, the administration said.
