Hartford, Connecticut (CaymanMama.com) –General Motors Corp. announced Tuesday that former CEO and chairman of AT&T, Edward Whitacre Jr. will transition to take the same spot for the reorganized automaker this summer.

Whitacre, 67, will succeed Kent Kresa, but Kresa will continue to server as General Motors’ interim chairman until the company comes out of bankruptcy protection as a new company, majority-owned by the American government.

According to the Associated Press, “Whitacre was chairman and CEO of telecommunications giant AT&T and its predecessor companies from 1990 to 2007. During his tenure, he led the company through several acquisitions and sales. Whitacre sits on the boards of Exxon Mobil Corp. and the railroad company Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp.”

GM says the new chairman will join a powerful new GM board formed of Kresa and including current members Philip A. Laskawy, Kathryn V. Marinello, Erroll B. Davis, Jr., E. Neville Isdell and CEO Fritz Henderson.

General Motors filed for  Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week in a last ditch effort to reorganize and get rid of  unwanted assets.
