Virginia Beach, Virginia (CaymanMama.com) – USA Today’s new publisher, David Hunke, who took over as publisher in April, told the media on Wednesday that the newspaper is finalizing plans to present an electronic version of the printed newspaper and charge readers for their online news.
The new electronic replica of the newspaper will be sent to reader’s email inboxes beginning August 3rd, and will cost somewhat less than printed versions of USA Today, which is America’s largest newspaper by circulation.
Hunke said that USA Today is still looking for other ways to charge for their news as the media industry continues to struggle with drastic advertising regression.
He added that he does not foresee a charge to be imposed for access to USA Today’s main Web site. However, he added that mobile applications, such as those sold on on Apple Inc.’s iPhone, may be an opportunity where readers will be willing to pay for their news.
Hunke said the newspaper is being “extraordinarily bullish” on the switch to mobile devices and corresponding apps. “You will hear us talk about hybrid solutions as the key to us moving forward,” he said.
