Galveston, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — The killer of Tejano music sensation and crowd favorite Selena lost a court appeal Wednesday in Texas’ criminal appeals court due to a filing in the wrong county.
According to the Associated Press, “Yolanda Saldivar had asked the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals to order an appeal filed nine years ago in Nueces County to move forward. But the court said the appeal should have been filed in Harris County, where she was tried and convicted of the 1995 shooting of the singer.”
Saldivar is serving a life sentence for the shooting death of Selena Quintanilla Perez, 23, at a Corpus Christi motel room. She served as Selena’s fan club founding member and oversaw Selena’s Selena Etc. clothing company, but had been accused of embezzeling fan club funds.
Prosecutors argued Saldivar shot Selena on purpose after the singer met with and confronted Saldivar about the embezzlement claims. Saldivar contested the shooting was an accident when while she was gesturing with a handgun.
Saldivar comes up for parole in 2025.
