Des Moines, Iowa (CaymanMama.com) — Novartis AG, a prominent Swiss pharmaceuticals maker, announced Friday it has successfully created the first batch of swine flu vaccine.

The vaccine was developed in cells, rather than grown in eggs as is usually standard when making vaccines, the company said.

The Novartis announcement follows just one day after the World Health Organization(WHO) declared the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, indicating that a worldwide outbreak is present. WHO says drugmakers will most likely have the vaccine approval and be ready for sale after September.

According to the Associated Press, “Novartis said it would use the first batch of vaccine for pre-clinical evaluation and testing. It is also being considered for clinical trials, the company said.”

The swine flu vaccine was developed at a Novartis plant in Marburg, Germany, where the company said the plant has the potential to produce millions of doses of vaccine a week. A second facility is under construction in Holly Springs, North Carolina, the company said.

Novartis said over 30 global governments have called for vaccine supplies, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, which submitted a $289 million order in May.
