Albuquerque, New Mexico (CaymanMama.com) –The competitive market of smartphones just got a little more cutthroat as the world’s two largest cell phone makers, Nokia and Samsung, released new phone models on Monday that are proving to be comparable to iPhone and Palm’s Pre, but at a fraction of the cost.
“Consumer demand for more capable devices seems to be accelerating despite the general economic doom and gloom,” said Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight.
“Samsung and Nokia are playing smart by offering these sorts of products at punchy price points,” Wood continued.
Leading cellular phone maker Nokia unveiled three new handsets, including touch-screen model 5530 Xpressmusic, selling for $280 before tax, starting next quarter.
Samsung released its “Jet” model, featuring a full touch screen, a next-generation display and enhanced processor for faster mobile Internet access.
Samsung touted its new phone as “smarter than a smartphone,” but admitted the device could not be officially considered a smartphone due to its lack of an open operating system which the category defines.
“Consumers really don’t care about the software platform or operating system — they just want a capable device at a punchy price that lets them do the things they want to do whether that is listen to music, take pictures or update their status on Facebook,” Wood explained.
