Portland, Oregon (CaymanMama.com) — A tragedy occurred in the District of Columbia Monday when a Metro transit train crashed into the rear end of another train during the capital city’s busy rush hour traffic blitz, claiming the lives of at least six people and injuring many more.

The trailing train’s cars began to jackknife into the air and fall one after another on top of each other.

Cars of both trains were mangled in the wreckage, and D.C. fire spokesman Alan Etter said crews were forced to cut some victims out of what was described as a “mass casualty event.” Rescue workers used steel ladders to get to the top of the upper train cars in search of survivors.

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty confirmed six deaths.

According to the Associated Press, “Fire Chief Dennis Rubin said rescue workers treated 70 people at the scene and sent some of them to local hospitals, two with life-threatening injuries. A Metro official said the dead included the female operator of the trailing train. Her name was not immediately released.”

The train crash occurred at approximately 5 p.m. EDT on the system’s red line, the Metro’s busiest train which runs underground for much of its track but rises to ground level which is where the accident took place, near the Maryland border in northeast Washington.

Homeland Security Department spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said that federal authorities found no indication of any terrorism connection.
