Following are some items to consider as you make that decision:
1. The best first step is to network by asking friends and family about their OB/GYN and gather referrals. The best way to know if the OB/GYN is good is by word of mouth.
2. Get a list of OB/GYN’s which is within the network of your insurance company. Then, research those doctors and see which ones are closest to you. Distance is an important factor since the drive to the hospital can be excruciatingly long when in labor!
3. Start a list of questions you’d want answered by a potential doctor. Think along the lines of his/her policies on epidurals and caesarian sections, as well as general pregnancy questions along the way.
4. Do your homework! Research the hospital with which the OB/GYN is affiliated. While you may feel comfortable with the OB/GYN, you may not prefer the hospital as a whole. Take this into consideration since it could affect your decision.
5. Interview a potential OB/GYN prior to choosing. Call the doctor’s office to set an appointment to meet. Explain to the receptionist your goal for the meeting. Then, schedule a meeting with the OB/GYN at his/her earliest convenience.
