Chicago, Illinois (CaymanMama.com) — Prior to taking to the streets with sparklers in celebration of the July 4th holiday, the public is being urged to be very careful.
A new message released Tuesday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) strongly encouraged families to put safety first when handling fireworks.
“We know that 70 percent of all (fireworks-related) accidents occur between June 20 and July 20,” commission head Inez Tenenbaum said during a fireworks safety demonstration held on the National Mall.
“This is the time of year that people are using fireworks.”
Tenenbaum said that the greatest amount of young people injured by fireworks range between the ages of 14 to 17.
As per the most recent CPSC report on the matter, there were seven fireworks-related deaths and approximately 7,000 injuries reported in 2008.
