US lawmakers force Aafia Siiddiqui to appear in court against her will
New York (Dawn.com): Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, the Pakistani Neuroscientist was forced to appear before the court. The judge asked for her presence to hear the testimony from the doctors treating the lady to ascertain whether her mental condition is fit to stand courtroom trial. Ms. Siddiqui appeared in court with her hand hands folded.
Her lawyers claimed her saying that she had seen her children in her cell and she is disturbed about the strip search before she is brought to the court. She presumes that her strip search videos are being distributed on the internet.
Ms. Siddiqui is accused of helping Al-Qaeda and also attacking US army officer while she was being questioned.
Chief of Tahreek Nifaz-i-Shariat-i-Muhammadi surfaces in Peshawar
Peshawar (Dawn.com): Maulana Sufi Mohammad, reappeared in Peshawar after being missing in April. His close relative told the news agency on phone that Sufi Mohammad and his family with women and children has reached Peshawar but refused to disclose the location where they are staying.
According to the official sources Maulana Sufi is in protective custody.
17th constitutional amendment to go - says PPP CEC
Islamabad (Dawn.com): The office bearers of Pakistan Peoples Party Central Executive committee resolved that they favored all amendments made to the constitution of Pakistan. They passed a resolution favoring repeal of 17th amendment and the Article 51(2)B and the constitution to be amended on the lines of charter of democracy.
The resolution passed by the CEC also said, ‘The issues and problems confronting the nation are so complex and varied that no one party or institution can solve them alone. A resolution of our problems requires collective national effort backed by all political forces and state institutions. Hence the need for pursuing the policy of broad-based national reconciliation.’
Tax on stock markets must not enforced - Tarin
Karachi (Dawn.com): The adviser to the PM on Finance, Shaukat Tarin, told the media yesterday that he does not favor tax on the stock markets in Pakistan. He said that he will request the CBR to do away with the withholding tax. He said that the legitimacy of such tax is questionable in presence of federal excise duty and presumptive tax.
67.21 points gain registered at the Karachi Stock Exchange
Karachi (Business Recorder): The stock at the Karachi Stock Exchange surged by 67.21 points yesterday with the KSE closing with 7,538.49 points on board.
