El Paso, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — In celebration of a newly expanded “G.I. Bill”, President Barack Obama gathered with a group of younger veterans Monday to mark its implementation and the benefits that the president calls a “moral obligation to those who sacrificed greatly on our behalf.”

The newest rendition of the well-known World War II legislation considerably inflates education benefits for both men and women who served at least three years in the military following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The expansion now gives way for full scholarships at in-state public universities for eligible veterans, service members, reservists, and National Guard members. Ample financial aid was made available at over 1,000 private colleges and universities across the nation.

The first tuition checks authorized by the newly expanded G.I. bill were sent by mail on August 1.

“This is not simply a debt that we are repaying to the remarkable men and women who have served. It is an investment in our own country,” Obama said during the gathering at George Mason University in northern Virginia.

“These men and women must now be prepared to lead our nation in the peaceful pursuit of economic leadership in the 21st century.”

Many Republicans opposed the new legislation due to worries it would reduce retention rates among those individuals currently serving in the military.
