San Diego, California (CaymanMama.com) — As hurricane season continues to cause waves around the nation’s coasts, the newest hurricane has set its sights on the scenic Hawaiian islands.
Hurricane Felicia lost much of its intensity on Friday as it barreled toward Hawaii and although forecasters observe it may continue to lose strength, there is still an ever-present threat that it may flood the tiny string of islands.
According to CNN.com, “Hurricane Felicia was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane as it moved west-northwest toward Hilo, Hawaii, at 13 miles per hour. Felicia’s maximum sustained winds slowed from 140 miles per hour Thursday to near 100 miles per hour as of 8 a.m. PT (11 a.m. ET) Friday,” as per reports from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.
Weather experts predict that as the hurricane passes over cooler waters, it will continue to wane. However, Felicia is expected to hit Hawaii by Monday as a tropical depression or as a tropical storm, reported meteorologist Derek Wroe at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Even so, if Felicia fails to make contact with Hawaii as a full force hurricane, it still has the potential to cause great flooding damage to the islands.
