Chicago, Illinois (CaymanMama.com) — President Barack Obama put on another of his many hats Monday and turned his sights on the nation’s brave military who are dealing with life after war, by promising to increase assistance.

While speaking to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Phoenix, Arizona, Obama said his administration and the government he heads will continue to honor military service, and will never lose sight of what he called “true American heroes.”

Obama pledged to amp up spending to assist war veterans who are coping with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries. Obama said injuries as severe as those are the “the defining injuries of today’s wars.”

“So caring for those affected by them is a defining purpose of my budget — billions of dollars more for treatment and mental-health screening to reach our troops on the front lines and more mobile and rural clinics to reach veterans back home,” Obama said. “We are not going to abandon these American heroes. We are going to do right by them.”

Obama reiterated his intention to bring home all U.S. combat brigades from Iraq by the end of August 2010, and all other American troops by the end of 2011.
