Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Asbestos has been called the top criminal in respiratory cancers. If a person is exposed to asbestos, inhaling or swallowing the tiny microscopic fibers wreaks havoc on the body’s system, resulting in a fatal fate. Currently, no cure has been found for these two diseases, lung cancer and mesothelioma cancer.

Mesothelioma cancer and lung cancer are both are serious illnesses. However, there are numerous differences between the two. The causing factor, the onset location, diagnosis, and the methods of treatment are quite different.

Mesothelioma is exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos, whereas the primary cause of lung cancer is cigarette smoking. In the case of lung cancer, asbestos exposure is the secondary cause.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer. It affects about 3,000 people, on average, per year, but lung cancer is wide spread. The ratio is 65 times higher than mesothelioma, affecting 200,000 people annually.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, which is the lining membrane around the body’s organs, such as the abdomen and the heart. This cancer has three different types. Mesothelioma is termed as pleural when the attack is on the lungs; termed as peritoneal when the attack is on the abdominal cavity, and pericardial when it is the heart cavity.

In this disease, the malignant cells develop on the mesothelium and cause infection. These cancerous cells are mostly spread out, and are treated through surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, or a combination of one or more therapies.

The diseases, lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma, have the same target (to attach the lung). But the locations of the attacks are different. Lung cancer attacks the tissues of the lung, whereas mesothelioma attacks the lining. The causes, the diagnosis, and treatments also differ in both the diseases. Both have a short prognosis and both prove fatal.
