San Diego, California (CaymanMama.com) — The number of birth defects in China has nearly doubled in the past decade and are steadily on the rise in Beijing and several provinces, a state-run newspaper reported Tuesday.

The alarming rise in birth defects has been attributed to modern diagnostic techniques and monitoring capabilities, in addition to the fact that Chinese women are steadily waiting until they are older to have children, China Daily reported, as per the Beijing municipal health bureau.

Environmental pollution is also said to be reason for the increase, the newspaper said, quoting Caijing magazine.

According to CNN.com, “The rate of birth defects in Beijing last year was 170 per 10,000 births, nearly twice the rate in 1997, when it was 90 birth defects per 10,000 births, China Daily reported, using figures from the health bureau.”

The most common birth defects reported fall under congenital heart disease, extra fingers or toes, cleft lip or palate, and neural tube defects. The areas most affected are in the provinces of Zhejiang, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Guangdong, China Daily reported.
