Green Guide: Where to start when recycling electronics

Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Faster than they are released to the market, computers, cell phones, and game players have a newer, faster, smaller version and consumers are left to not only upgrade, but toss out the gadgets they already have.

However, since these high-tech gizmos are unable to be tossed in the trash can since they are filled with toxic chemicals, many people are left to wonder what to do with their old purchases.

Luckily, many manufacturers and retailers are beginning to take a greener route to electronics by taking them back at their locations so the consumer doesn’t toss them into the landfill.

Here are some easy steps for recycling electronics and keeping the earth a greener place:

* Take in or return cell phones back to their manufacturers. Many cell phone stores have a receptacle ready for donations or take the electronics and donate them to charity.
* Return iPods to an Apple store or mail them back to be recycled; or sell your old iPod for the parts.
* Avoid tossing old TVs in a crowded landfill by taking them to a safe electronics recycling facility near you.
* Take electronics to stores like Best Buy and Staples who have easy-to-access recycling programs.
