Plastic bags get caught up in trees

Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Reusable shopping bags are used more now than ever, but even though the benefits they provide to the environment are evident, most American’s still opt for the ease of quantity of the plastic bag.

Fortunately, more and more cities nationwide are taking a stand and choosing to make recyclable bags a necessity.

City of San Jose voted on Tuesday to put a ban on all plastic and paper bags at stores.

The ban is not scheduled to take effect until 2001 following a comprehensive environmental review of its impact. This time frame will give retailers and consumers enough time to prepare and stock up on cloth bags, which now come in every shape, size, color and fabric imaginable.

In other cities such as San Francisco, plastic bags have been completely banned or levied a tax. San Jose is the first city to put a ban on paper bags.

According to a Yahoo! Green blogger, “China’s ban on plastic bags, while not strictly adhered to, still resulted in 40 billion less bags being used and cut their petroleum use by 1.6 million tons.”

In June of this year, the U.N.’s Environment Program Chief moved for a ban that would span the globe on plastic bag production.
