Baltimore, Maryland (CaymanMama.com) — In a move that is aimed at help those in need versus turning them away, top Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives criticized health insurers who say that domestic violence is a “pre-existing condition”, making battered women ineligible for coverage.

Those members of the House have vowed to implement a widespread ban on the injudicious system as the health care reform legislation currently makes its way through Congress.

Thus far, forty-two states have already passed the prohibition on the pre-existing condition claim, according to a report from the National Women’s Law Center.

The states that have not passed the ban include Idaho, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.

“Think of this,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. “You’ve survived domestic violence, and now you are discriminated (against) in the insurance market because you have a pre-existing medical condition. Well, that will all be gone.”

Robert Zirkelbach, spokesman for America’s Health Insurance Plans, which represents health insurance companies also supported the prohibition.

“No one should be denied coverage because they are a victim of domestic abuse,” said Zirkelbach.
