Louisville, Kentucky (CaymanMama.com) — Many were shocked and surprised by the news that President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, as announced Friday morning.

The news has gathered mixed reactions, mainly due in part to Obama’s short time in office — just a little over nine months.

“Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” said the Norwegian Nobel Committee while recognizing “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

World peace leaders Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev are in agreement with the decision to award the Nobel prize to Obama, while others see it as a premature move.

A Pakistani conservative religious party leader called the award a “joke” while a Palestinian Hamas official said, “Obama has a long way to go still and lots of work to do before he can deserve a reward. Obama only made promises and did not contribute any substance to world peace.”

Obama was also taken by surprise after learning he won the Nobel Peace Prize but said he was “deeply humbled”. He plans to fly to Oslo to accept the honor.

President Obama said he did not see the Nobel Prize “as a recognition of my own accomplishments,” but rather as an acknowledgment of the of objectives he and his administration have set for the U.S. and the world.

“I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize,” Obama said.
